Discovered in 1789 by W. Herschel, Enceladus is believed to contain liquid water under its icy surface, therefore a top candidate for life. Active cryovolcanoes at the south pole shoot large jets of water ice particles and internal heat into space. Enceladus orbits within Saturn's E-ring and has widely cratered and ridged terrain.
