Discovered on March 28, 1802, Pallas is estimated to comprise 7% of the mass of the asteroid belt, slightly larger than 4 Vesta but 10-30% less massive and likely a remnant protoplanet. The surface appears to contain silicate materials. The Palladian orbit, at 34.°, is unusually highly inclined to the plane of the asteroid belt, and the orbital eccentricity is nearly as large as that of Pluto, making Pallas relatively inaccessible to spacecraft. A flyby after the Dawn probe's visits to 4 Vesta and 1 Ceres was not possible.
